TN’s rise in IPC cases due to Covid protocol violation

There has been a rise in crimes against women and a dip in other serious crimes reported in Tamil Nadu in 2020, though the year saw a fivefold increase in cases registered under the IPC, mostly for Covid-19 protocol violations. The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report says that while in 2019, the state recorded 1,68,116 cognizable cases under the Indian Penal Code, in 2020, the number jumped to 8,91,700.
