PBKS had earlier won the toss and opted to field first. The Capitals, though, got off to an aggressive start with David Warner (46) and Prithvi Shaw (54) forging a 94-run stand for the opening wicket.
Rilee Rossouw (82*) later joined the party to take DC to 213/2.
In PBKS’ reply, they lost Shikhar Dhawan (0) early, but Atharva Taide (55) and Liam Livingstone (94) gave them hope in the middle overs.
PBKS needed 33 to win from the final over, and 17 runs came off the first three balls, including a six off a no-ball. However, Livingstone failed to make anything out of the free-hit and that eventually cost them the match.
The win for the alread-eliminated DC meant that they jumped off the last place in the IPL standings to go ninth with 10 points.
SRH, who are also eliminated, sit bottom of the points table with eight points.
On Monday, GT beat SRH by 34 runs to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs. GT continue to lead the points table with 18 points, while Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) make up the top four.
They are closely followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS), all of whom have 12 points each though Bangalore have an extra game in hand.
