West Indies vs New Zealand: Martin Guptill surpasses Rohit Sharma as highest T20I run scorer
Kiwi opener Martin Guptill breached Rohit Sharma's tally in T20 Internationals to once again become the highest run-getter in the shortest format of the game.
Guptill scored 15 runs in the third T20I against West Indies at Sabina Park in Kingston but was just five runs behind Rohit's tally of 3,487 runs at the start of the match. Guptill now sits at 3,497 runs after his short innings on Sunday night.
Rohit recently overtook Guptill as the leading run-scorer after scoring 64 in the first T20I against West Indies and had maintained the lead throughout the series.
Guptil looked in good touch as he hit a four and a six in his short stay before being bowled in the third over. The right-hander moved across the stumps to slog sweep an Akeal Hossein delivery. But the ball was too full for him to connect and he the ball hit the stumps.
Brandon King and Shamarh Brooks, meanwhile, shared a 102-run opening partnership as the West Indies struck a winning formula at last, beating New Zealand by eight wickets in third T20I and preventing the Black Caps from sweeping the series.
After making the bold decision to rest captain Nicholas Pooran, the hosts also played more than one spinner for the first time in the series and their bowlers flourished on a slow pitch at Sabina Park.
New Zealand made only 145-7 after winning the toss, falling well short of its 185-5 in the first match and 215-5 in the second.
The West Indies reached its target with an over to spare, as stand-in captain Rovman Powell hit Jimmy Neesham for six to clinch the win and leave the series 2-1 in New Zealand’s favor.
