Naveen-ul-Haq took a spectacular catch at mid-off and Heinrich Klaasen played a blinder of an innings to fire Durban’s Super Giants into their first-ever SA20 Final with a 69-run win over Joburg Super Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Wanderers on Thursday. Super Giants will face Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final on Saturday.

Batting first, Durban’s Super Giants blasted 211 for 6 in 20 overs despite reeling at 95 for 4 at one stage. After the top-order collapse, the recovery was constructed by Bhanuka Rajapaksa , Klaasen and Wiaan Mulder. Sri Lanka’s Rajapaksa slammed 35 off 23 balls before Klaasen scored a whirlwind 74 off just 30 balls. Mulder scored a fifty in just 23 balls.

Klaasen and Mulder in fact added 101 runs in just 38 balls for the fifth wicket to take Super Giants past the 200-run mark. Nandre Burger and Doug Bracewell took two wickets each for Super Kings.

In reply, the Super Kings chase never got the momentum that it needed. Captain Faf du Plessis fell in the second over the match before Naveen pulled off a screamer off Reece Topley to dismiss second opener Leus du Plooy. The batter hoped to clear the mid-off but Naveen timed his jump to perfection to take a two-handed grab in a flash.

Moeen Ali with 30 off 26 balls was the highest-run getter for Super Kings, but it wasn’t enough as they were bowled out on 142. Junior Dala emerged as Super Giants’ best bowler with four wickets for 38 in 3.4 overs. Naveen and Dwaine Pretorius also took two wickets each.

The final will take place at Newlands, Cape Town on 10 February.

Sunrisers had been the form team in SA20 2024, winning seven matches from 10 in the league phase. They defeated Super Giants by 51 runs in Qualifier 1 to reach the final.
