Mayank Agarwal suffered a health scare while travelling on a flight headed for New Delhi, Karnataka state cricket association sources told news agency PTI. The Karnataka Ranji Trophy team captain was rushed to a local hospital in Agartala. Agarwal is currently the captain of the domestic side in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy competition.

Agarwal has been admitted in the ILS Hospital in Agartala. The hospital issued a statement later on Tuesday, saying: ” This evening, cricketer Mr Mayank Agarwal was transported from MBB Airport Agartala to ILS Hospitals Agartala. He was experiencing some oral irritation and swelling on his lips. After being assessed by the consultants of the hospital in emergency, he was admitted. For now, he is clinically stable and is being constantly clinically monitored.”

Agarwal captained Karnataka to a 29-run victory over Tripura in the Ranji Trophy contest played at the Maharaja Bir Bikram Stadium in Agartala, which took place from 26-29 January.

Agarwal, who scored 51 and 17 against Tripura, was supposed to travel with the whole team to Rajkot via Delhi when the incident happened. “The team was on flight and apparently Agarwal started feeling uneasy and vomited a couple of times sitting on the flight. Since he started feeling sick, he de-boarded. KSCA MR Shahvir Tarapore called and we quickly sent two of our representatives to the ILS hospital. He is under observation and we are told doctors are running some tests. Now there are multiple theories as to what he might have consumed,” a Tripura Cricket Association official said.

Next up for Karnataka is the clash against Railways at the Lalbhai Contractor Stadium in Surat from Friday (2 February). If he feels better and is in a condition to travel, he will return to Bengaluru.

Agarwal has been in sublime form in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season. He has amassed 460 runs in four matches at an average of 44.28 with two centuries to his name.

Agarwal had finished as the leading run-scorer in the 2022–23 season of India’s premier first-class competition.

Karnataka are second in Group C of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group with 15 points from four games, having won two matches and lost one.

Agarwal has not been in the reckoning for Indian cricket team for some time. His last outing for the country came against Sri Lanka in March 2022. In total, he’s played 21 Test matches for India since making his debut in 2018. He’s scored 1488 runs at an average of 41.3, with four centuries. The right-handed opener also played five ODIs.

Agarwal is part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2024 season. He had led the Punjab Kings in the 2022 season before making the switch to SRH.
