For more than a year since the pandemic struck, Kerala managed to keep its number of Covid deaths remarkably low. As late as April '21, well into the second wave, the state's share of the national death toll was just 1.4%. In September, its share rose to 45.2%, while in October it soared to an alarming 64.7% — for the first time, Kerala's share of total deaths in the country overtook its share in total new cases.
