Kerala: Hindu converted to Christianity to be first layman to be canonised
Devasahayam Pillai, beatified as a martyr by the Catholic church for the torture he had to endure after he converted to Christianity in the 18th century, would be conferred sainthood by the Vatican on May 15, 2022. He would be the Indian first layman to be declared a Saint by the Catholic church.
