India vs England: When was the last time Team India suffered a series defeat at home?
The Indian cricket team have been an unbeatable force on home soil in Test cricket for more than 11 years now. Over the last decade, Australia and England have managed the odd Test victory in India but they have been found wanting as far as winning an entire series is concerned. Since 2012, India have only suffered three Test losses at home.
When did India last lose a Test series at home?
The last time India lost a Test series at home was against England back in 2012. Since that outing, the side, on home soil, has featured in 14 Test series and two one-off Test matches against Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
In these 14 series, India have maintained a dominant record – 36 wins, three losses and seven draws. India’s home dominance is evident from the stats, which include an impressive win percentage of 78.26.
What happened in 2012?
England, under Alastair Cook, were a resolute unit. They toured India in 2012 and while the hosts started with a comprehensive win in the first Test match, the tables turned in the next fixture in Mumbai. Kevin Pietersen put up an absolute masterclass in Mumbai and along with Cook, the duo batted India out of the contest.
Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar also displayed terrific spin bowling to topple the Indian batting order in Mumbai and then in Kolkata. The final match in Nagpur ended in a draw.
For England, major contributions came from the spin duo of Graeme Swann, who picked up 20 wickets at an average of 24.75. Monty Panesar bagged 17 wickets at an average of 26.82. India’s Ravichandran Ashwin, on the other hand, was well below par as he could pick up only 14 wickets at an average of 52.64.
As far as their batting was concerned, England captain, Cook, topped the batting charts with 562 runs. Additionally, Pietersen produced an impactful performance and Joe Root too made a promising debut.
The upcoming series
India and England are now all set to face each other in a five-match Test series scheduled to start on Thursday, January 25. The opening fixture of the series is set to be played in Hyderabad.
