Highlights, India vs England, 1st Test, Full Cricket Score: India 21/0 at stumps on Day 1 after bundling England out for 183

The day belonged to India, who dismissed England for a meagre 183. All the Indian pacers came to the party, the four-pacer formula worked well for the visitors. Bumrah was the star of the show and seems to have really found his rhythm, encouraging signs for India in that sense.

And then, with the bat, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul held fort, denying the hosts any wicket. Even tomorrow, India will most likely take the cautious approach and see out a few overs. But they’ll be delighted as far as today’s performance is concerned.

Shardul Thakur: (Jonny) Bairstow was poised well to score a fifty so getting him out at that period was crucial. And to get Root, in the 60s, or 90s or early, is always a good wicket to have. If we look at the pitch, it didn't feel like it would turn a lot so better to go in with four seamers. Enjoying the Dukes ball and English conditions, good preparation in Durham, good idea of how this summer will be, and it's a good one for us.

Robinson continues. Huge appeal for LBW off the first delivery against Rohit. It was a nip backer, there was no bat involved but seemed like it would go down leg. Ball tracking also indicates that it would have gone down leg. Unsuccessful review for England. Rohit gets an inside edge, the ball hits his pad and then falls just out of reach of the short leg fielder’s reach. A maiden from Robinson. And that’ll be STUMPS on Day 1.

Bowling change for England as Sam Curran, left-arm fast medium, comes into the attack. And straight away poses problems for Rahul, beating the right-hander’s outside edge twice around the off stump. The left arm pacer’s deliveries are skidding off the surface. Curran starts off with a maiden.

Robinson continues. Rahul clips the first delivery for towards square leg for single. Half hearted shout for LBW off the fifth delivery against Rohit, but the umpire isn’t interested. Just one run off the over.

Good stuff from Broad in that over. He surprises Rahul with a short ball first up, he does well to fend it away to the off side. He then gets an outside edge along the ground wide of the slip cordon for a single. Rohit leaves one and then looks to defend one off the front foot but gets an outside edge which falls well short of the third slip fielder. The last one is left alone. One run off the over.

Robinson is hitting the deck hard and extracting bounce as well. He starts off with one down the leg side but then corrects his length. He brings one back in off the last ball and pings Rohit on the front pad, the umpire turns down the LBW appeal. Looked like height was a factor. Another maiden from Robinson.

Rohit looks calm and composed and patient as well in the middle. He's leaving them well and defending them solidly. Broad bowled a no ball and drifted one on the pads which ended up as a leg bye. Rahul defends the last two balls to finish the over. Broad hasn't been hitting the stumps often with his lines but he did look to bowl straight in this over.

An intriguing over. There were hands on the heads of the English fielders as Robinson delivered a good length delivery which nipped back in sharply. Rahul shouldered his arms and it flew inches wide of the off stump. Rahul then hit a couple of decent shots but the fielder at mid-wicket and point put in good effort to stop them and not give away any runs. After a leave, Rahul goes for a slash outside off but it tails away to beat the outside edge. The last one is a a touch wide outside off, Rahul this time doesn't fiddle with it. A maiden to start off for Robinson.

It's a good battle out there between Anderson and Rahul and Broad and Rohit. Rohit pokes at the first ball of the over and gets beaten. But he straightaway recuperates, defends one solidly, leaves another alone before cracking one through point. The rest two are defended as well without any difficulties. Four runs off the over.

Despite that four it was a decent over from Anderson. He beat Rahul's outside edge as well before being hit for the boundary. Anderson again looked to bowl those outswingers. Rahul nicely drove one through cover-point for a four after being beaten by a beautiful outswinger. Rahul looking confident out in the middle.

Broad got a bit of seam movement in the over. He starts off with a ripper, one which moves away from outside off, Rohit feels for it and gets beaten, it swings further and the keeper doesn't collect it cleanly, they run through for a single. Broad then brought one back in to Rahul who brought his bat down late to defend it. The rest of the deliveries are outside off and left alone by Rahul. The last leave - Rahul decided to leave at the last moment, he played inside the line and let it through. Just the one run off the over.

A disciplined over from Anderson. He concentrated on bowling outswingers. There was one which held its line and just came back in a little, Rahul left it alone. He was solid in his defense and left well. A maiden from Anderson.

Lovely shape from Anderson in that over. He concentrated on bowling outswingers. He drew an outside edge which flew wide of the third slip for a streaky four. The rest were either left alone or defended.

A brilliant bowling performance from India. The pacers pick up all the 10 wickets. Four for Bumrah, three for Shami, two for Shardul, and one for Siraj. The Indian's bowled good lengths and swung and seamed them off the pitch. They pulled their length up compared to the WTC final and reaped the rewards. England were at one point 138.3 and they crumbled to 183 all out in space of around 15 overs. For England, Root was the top scorer with 64 but overall, England batsmen will be disappointed with their shot selection.

Anderson survives in that over. But he will be on strike again in the next over. Shami delivers the first one full outside off, Anderson goes for a loose drive but misses. Anderson then pushes one to mid on, Curran sets off but is sent back quickly. Shami then drops one short outside off, Anderson leaves it alone. Shami beats the outside edge again with an outswinger before tucking an inswinger to mid-wicket for a single. Curran then sliced one over point for a four to finish the over.

Curran gets a boundary again in the over but Anderson is on strike now. Curran looks to thump one over mid on but mistimes it straight to the fielder to start off. He then defends the next before missing the flick off one down the leg side. He then looks to leave one late but gets an outside edge to third man, they don't take a single. Curran then hits a full toss straight to extra cover before cracking a full delivery through covers for four.

Curran got a boundary in that over. He picked one up over mid-wicket for a four. He turned down a single that was available earlier. He cracked one to cover but straight to the fielder. And then mistimed a low full toss to mid off. He then went for a hoick but got an outside edge which fell just short of the charging fielder at third man. Anderson defends the last ball solidly as the crowd applauds.

Bumrah concentrated on bowling it full and swung it away. Curran defended and left the first five balls. But then takes a single off the last one. However, that last ball is called a NO BALL as Bumrah had overstepped. Bumrah finishes the over with another outswinger which Anderson leaves alone. Just one off the over.

Curran going for it now. He smashes the second ball over long on for a six. And then after a couple of dots, he goes for that heave again but misses, the ball flies inches wide of the leg stump. Curran then pulls the last one wide of deep mid-wicket. He has the option to take two but takes a single and keeps the strike. 7 runs off the over.

Bumrah continues. Curran taking the cautious route as he sneaks a single after playing out four dots. The pacer then traps Broad LBW off the last as the left hander misses a full delivery that curled in from leg stump towards off. One run and a wicket. India on top right now.

Thakur comes into the attack and bowls a brilliant over, getting the prized wicket of Root as well as Robinson, although the latter’s wicket was the result of poor shot selection. Broad, the new man in, announces his arrival with a fine cover drive that fetches him four runs. Another successful over, two wickets and four runs off it. Momentum with India.
