That brings us to the end of our coverage of the 2024 U-19 World Cup, which was originally supposed to be hosted in Sri Lanka but had to be moved to South Africa after ICC’s suspension of SLC. And what a tournament it turned out to be, with two of the most deserving teams locking horns in the final and Hugh Weibgen’s Aussies emerging triumphant in dominant fashion to win their fourth title at this level.
On behalf of the sports desk at Firstpost, this is Amit signing off, wishing you all a good night!

U19 World Cup Final LIVE
The curse of India losing the final of ICC events now catches with the Uday Saharan-led U-19 side, who end up suffering a massive defeat in the final after dominating the tournament for the most part. Much like the Rohit Sharma-led side in the ICC World Cup last October and November, the Indians dished out one comprehensive victory after another and won all the matches except the one that matters the most. India were streets ahead of the other teams throughout the tournament, but fail to crack the knockout code that has been haunting Indian teams of late.
Australia have now won each of the last four ICC events across men’s, women’s and U-19 levels and this happens to be their third on the trot where they’ve vanquished India in the final. They remain by far the most consistent team in the sport across formats and levels, and it is a successful system put in place that ensures they keep winning one tournament after another.

Vidler bowls out a tidy over in which concedes just two singles. SIX! Tiwari gets down on one knee and produces a slog-sweep that sends the ball sailing over the cow corner fence! Eight off MacMillan’s penultimate over as India reach 166/8 at the end of the second powerplay, needing another 88 to win off 60 balls — an equation that wouldn’t have been a near-impossible one were they not eight-down.

The southpaw clobbers the ball over the bowler’s head in the second delivery of the over before getting a top-edge off an attempted pull in the next delivery that lands in the vacant square leg region and rolls away for a four. Abhishek decides to attack Straker as well, clearing his front leg and slapping a short-of-length ball over the bowler’s head to collect his third four in two overs. He’s batting on 39 at the moment, and will be setting his sights on a fifty. India, meanwhile, have gone past 150 and their next target will be 200.

Abhishek then collects a boundary in the following over, shuffling to his left to make room for a lofted drive over cover off MacMillan, moving into the 20s in the process. Vidler’s been given a breather after all, with Mahli Beardman replacing him in the attack. FOUR! Musheer welcomes Beardman into the attack with a boundary, guiding the ball towards deep midwicket where Sam Konstas puts in a slider in vain. BOWLED! Beardman responds in style by getting Musheer castled in the very next delivery as the batter, who was starting to gain some confidence, ends up getting done in by the variable bounce, chopping the ball onto the stumps off one that stays a touch lower. India skipper Uday Saharan, who along with Sachin Dhas had led India’s turnaround in the semi-final against South Africa, joins Adarsh at the centre. Saharan gets off the mark with a single off Beardman and collects three off Straker’s bowling in the following over after driving through the extra cover region. FOUR! Musheer was taking off his gloves and starting to march back to the dressing room when he looked at the giant screen and decided to head back. Straker oversteps in the third delivery, but does well to bowl a dot in the subsequent Free Hit.
