CMRL leaves Thiru Vi Ka Park with fewer, smaller trees
Thiru.vi.ka Park in Shenoy Nagar , where more than 200 trees got axed over the course of 12 years for metro rail construction, will be restored in two months, said Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). Residents, however will not get back their neighbourhood park with tall shade giving trees as CMRL will be planting 150 medium sized trees in 1.2m deep planter boxes to prevent the roots from growing into the underground facility The planter boxes will have waterproofing, root barriers, geo-textile membranes and drain cells to prevent water seeping into the basement areas. Deeprooted trees will be planted along the periphery, where more than 1000 saplings were planted in Miyawaki method around four years ago.
