Tanuja Sodhi was in Class 3 when her mother was sent to a mental asylum. “That’s when my safety net was pulled off,” says Sodhi, now a 53-year-old Powai-based health coach whose mother suffered from schizophrenia after losing an infant son to electrocution. “A ‘motherless’ child was an easy target for certain uncles and ‘caretakers’ to molest,” says Sodhi, recalling the confusing childhood and teenage years when “panic and paranoia” were her “default emotions”.
