Asian Games 2023: Indian women's cricket team reaches semis after match against Malaysia gets washed out
Indian women’s cricket team progressed to the semi-finals of the Asian Games 2023 as their last eight match against Malaysia was abandoned due to rain on Thursday in Hangzhou, China.
India progressed to the semis as a result of being the higher-ranked ICC team.
The Women in Blue batted first and scored 173/2 in 15 overs with Shafali Verma smashing 67 off 39 balls. Jemimah Rodrigues scored 47 not out of 29, while Richa Ghosh added unbeaten 21 off seven balls.
The match was reduced to 15 over-a-side affair due to rain and Malaysia were handed a revised target of 177 as per DLS method.

However, only two balls were bowled in Malaysia’s chase with Ainna Hamizah Hashim scoring one run after which the rain interrupted the game resulting in a washout.
India are highest ranked team in the Asian Games as per the ICC ranking on June 1.
Earlier, Malaysia skipper Winifred Duraisingam won the toss and elected to field first on a slowish track. However, the team’s poor bowling combined with sloppy fielding resulted in a strong outing for Indian batters who were playing their first match in the Asian Games.
Shafali and skipper Smriti Mandhana put together 59 as the opening stand before the latter was dismissed on 27 by Mahirah Izzati Ismail.
Shafali, however, continued her innings and blasted five sixes and four fours in her knock of 67 before being dismissed LBW by Mas Elysa.
Rodrigues smashed six fours in her knock, while Ghosh accumulated one six and three fours in her blazing innings.
